DENTISTRY
Dental health is just as important for our pets as it is for us! During each visit, Dr. Brown will evaluate the health of your pet’s teeth and make recommendations for how we can work together to keep those teeth healthy. While some pets will let their families brush their teeth, many pets won’t have it.
Redness around the gums and plaque on the teeth are indications of dental disease, but much of the disease actually exists below the gum line where we can’t see it! This disease can lead to infection that spreads to other parts of the body (including the heart valves!) and causes life threatening complications. This is why we sometimes need to perform full dental cleanings under general anesthesia to remove the plaque above and below the gum lines and use x-rays to evaluate the health of the teeth and jaws. Anesthesia-free dental cleanings can sometimes remove the visible tartar, but they can’t clean below the gum line or allow us to perform dental x-rays. For each pet, we can discuss what the pros and cons are for each option to determine the best treatment plan.
Please call, text, or email to setup a general wellness consultation including a dental evaluation and keep your pet healthy and happy!
